Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Qatar
Qatar is one of the fastest growing economies, supported by the world’s fourth-largest gas reserves. The economy has been buoyed by strong expansion in different sectors which includes real estate and construction, transportation, tourism, infrastructure projects underway ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Expansion of Qatar’s infrastructure is not just the part of 2022 FIFA world cup, but also Emir of Qatar Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s National Vision 2030. The four Pillars of Qatar’s National vision 2030 includes Human Development, Social Development, Economic Development and Environmental Development. The Special Economic Zone Development is the part of one of the four pillars of national vision.

Qatar has planned for three economic zones to grow the state economy. The three new economic zones will not only be Qatar`s private sector major foundation but will also help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) expand across the country.
Economic Zone 1 – EZ1
Name : Ras Bufontas Special Economic Zone
Area : 4 km²
Location : Adjoining the New Hamad International Airport

– Information & Communications
– Healthcare
– Energy & Environment
– Hi-Tech Building
– Global warehousing companies
Economic Zone 2 – EZ2
Name : Al Karaana Special Economic Zone (Abu Nakhla)
Area : 38 km²
Location : Half way between Doha and Abu Samra
Target Sector/Facilities:
– Building Materials
– Machinery and Fabrications
– Specialized Spill Over Industries
– Safety and Maintenance
– Specialized Warehouse / Logistics
Economic Zone 3 – EZ3
Name : Um Alhoulis Special Economic Zone
Area : 33 km²
Location : Adjoining the New Port Project, just south of Wakrah
Target Sector/Facilities:
– Petrochemicals
– Building Materials
– Maritime
– Metals
– Logistics
– Food Processing
– Auto, Tools and Machinery
Qatar has already launched the first of three (Ras Bufontas) new special economic zones in Nov 2014 and remaining two SEZ are in first phase. These three SEZ can play a major role in the economic boom and will attract major companies around the world to set up their business in Qatar.
